Random Thoughts: Your Fortune

11.15.2012 by J. Doe // Leave a Comment

Many years ago, when I lived in New York, I opened a fortune cookie and was perplexed by the fortune. It read:

Your luck has changed completely today.

The problem with it should be obvious, but just in case it isn’t: How do I know what my luck has changed from and to? Sometimes it’s obvious, but other times, it isn’t really.

I taped the fortune to my computer monitor and pondered it from time to time.

The next time I ordered Chinese food, I received the same fortune:

Your luck has changed completely today.

It goes without saying that I went from perplexed to utterly baffled, as my luck had now done a complete 360 turn, but I still didn’t know where I had started and thus, where I had ended up.

I think you know what my fortune said the next time I ordered Chinese food.

Your luck has changed completely today.

I taped the three fortunes in a neat column on my computer monitor. It was a subject of much discussion among visitors to my office. Where did it start? Where will it end? How would I know? One visitor helpfully suggested I could solve the whole problem by simply not ordering any more Chinese food.

I still wonder, but I think I might have actually have figured it out, finally.

The message was actually the three fortunes together, and what they meant was this: Your luck can change completely, in just a moment, and you’ll never see it coming or know the reason why.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way from the Arbitration

11.14.2012 by J. Doe // 1 Comment

A funny thing happens over the next few days: my luck changes.

On Friday, to my surprise and amazement, I receive an annual performance review filled with nothing but positive comments and an upbeat outlook.

On Saturday, I attend a lineage society meeting, where I share my news with a few people: It’s over, I can stay in my house. The ladies are thrilled for me, and hug me, and one of them gives me a gift on the spot: A wine tasting party for 25 people at a local winery. She bought it at a fundraiser and it was about to expire, and who needed a party more than me, she said.

The certificate arrived in my mailbox two days later. That same week, another item appeared in my box – some old family photos from a distant cousin who had ignored my past requests for them, made it clear she didn’t want to deal with me. There was a letter along with them, which ended, “Please keep in touch, if you’d like to.”

I checked in with my neighbor about the rats, asking if they’d like to look at services or what we should do, and receive a reply: We’ve got a handyman who will deal with this cheap, he’s great – would you like us to send him to you?

Great, I say. Perfect.

I start to send out invitations to the wine tasting, and slowly receive replies: At first, people mostly view the evite and don’t reply, waiting to see who is coming. But then, slowly, a small crowd starts to form, and then a bigger one. I become bold, and invite a couple I haven’t see in a long time. Yes, they say, great to hear from you. I invite a new member of my lineage society who seems nice but I haven’t really talked to much. I have plans that day, she says, but I’d love to meet for coffee.

So we make other plans, and have a wonderful morning one day, and make still more plans.

And then, I muster up all the courage I have, and send an evite to The Lawyer.

The Divorce: Arbitration Aftermath

11.13.2012 by J. Doe // Leave a Comment

A few days after the arbitration, my father flies home; the day after that, I open my mailbox. It contains two bills: A medical bill that is a direct consequence of my health insurance being canceled, $4,000; and a legal bill that doesn’t yet include the tally of the mediation, $3,000.

I’m a little stressed, but then my calm returns.

I’m not sure how it’s going to be okay, but it is.
